“If they want to hang me, let them. And on the scaffold I will shout Freedom for the working class!”
– Mary Harris ‘Mother’ Jones
Its 1914 and impoverished coal miners are on strike in Colorado. On April 20th soldiers from the Colorado National Guard are dispatched to Ludlow to the quash the strike. Countless miners and their family members are injured, and 21 are killed – 11 of them children.
In the aftermath of this massacre, the prominent union rights activist Mother Jones, summons 500,000 UMW members, imploring them to pick up arms and fight. What follows is The Colorado Coalfield Wars… the bloodiest labor dispute in U.S. history.
Inspired by true events, The Trial Of Mother Jones is a historical supposition. This play takes place in the eye of the storm – between the Ludlow Massacre and before the Colorado Coalfield Wars – and it asks the question, was this the only way it could have gone?
