In late 2019, Maq surprised everyone by releasing her solo debut, Pleaser, a refreshingly bright and catchy missive of electro-pop tunes about heartbreak and love. A suite of singles in 'Someone Stranger' with Alice Ivy, 'Joe Rogan', 'tropical lush ice' and live EP recorded at the Sydney Opera House showcase the breadth of her taste and range. Ever since, Georgia has chased a more genuine form of pop music in her solo career, a vision hat retains all of the glamour and universality but feels unburdened from capitalist underpinnings. Mining the evergreen themes of romantic, sexual and self-love, Georgia Maq’s solo venture was not so much a transformation as it was a revelation. Opening up on her vulnerabilities and heartbreaks, her continued evolution is far beyond the Greek girl from Naarm that first set fire to the rain.

The result is hypnotic, heavy, and deeply spiritual, echoing the moody expanse of Pink Floyd, the harmonic richness of Fleetwood Mac, and the emotional unease of Radiohead. Wes Urbaniak is an amalgamation of songwriting, storytelling and unique craftsmanship. His music is real, honest, bold and a little odd in the best way possible. The experiences of his life have created stories through his songs. He pushes the limits within the human mind while opening up the possibilities for the human spirit to explore what’s dwelling within. His whole world is a wonderfully delirious imagination rendered into reality. It’s quite difficult to describe the beauty within which he lives and creates – it is something that must be experienced in real time. Wes lives in a yurt, in a forest, on an island in the Yellowstone River, and is surrounded by the mountains of Montana with his 100% adorable pup, Wilbur. His shop and studio are also on the island where he lives, wanders, and pokes at the nature of the curious mind. In the shop, he builds instruments primarily from reclaimed sources (100+ year old pianos / Red Rock Amphitheater Benches / naturally felled trees). In the studio, and wandering the island in the many hours of each day, he has learned to pull the strings around on most stringed instruments. His mind hears symphonies, his heart (Coyote) drives him to create them by pulling the whole world through his Spirit (Ala) and into a form of art, music, poetry, and dreams pushed into reality. Here we go Bearishly into what comes next…

Combining the shimmering resonance of handpans with bowed strings and upright bass, the ensemble develops evolving compositions that drift between ambient chamber music, meditative minimalism, and cinematic improvisation. Their performances invite audiences into states of reflection, stillness, wonder, and collective presence — music that feels at once grounded in Montana landscapes and suspended somewhere beyond them. Links BIGSKYLIGHT Official Website https://www.bigskylightmusic.com BIGSKYLIGHT Bandcamp https://bigskylight.bandcamp.com Acclaimed Tennessee finger style guitarist Bill Mize will be joined by acoustic instrumentalists Beth Bramhall and Beth Youngblood collaborate to bring audiences transformative musical experiences. Grammy-winning guitarist Bill Mize is a fitting representative of his Tennessee’s rich musical heritage, floating stylistically between Memphis soul and Appalachian highland melodies. His fingerstyle compositions are lauded as fluid and intricate, and their delivery masterful. “I received most of my musical education from a cheap Zenith radio,” says Mize, who as a child drifted off to sleep to the decidedly non-sleepy lullabyes emanating from Nashville’s WLAC and WSM and Knoxville’s WNOX. Maybe that’s why critics speak of his ability to “transport” the listener; the music itself has been transported. The links to his Tennessee roots are unmistakable, but so are the elements of the far wider musical realm he inhabits. Mize has performed nationwide at acoustic music festivals, listening rooms, guitar shows, and concert series since the 1980s. With his recent CD release, The Southwind, he continues to selectively share his innovative heartfelt, zen-tinged, soul arrangements. Bill Mize emerged in the late 80s with an innovative and influential wave of acoustic guitarists as part of the Windham Hill Guitar Sampler. Bill established himself with a signature sound reflective of his influences of Appalachian highland melodies and Memphis soul. As an independent musician, he has gone on take the top prize of the Winfield National Fingerstyle Guitar Competition, receive a GRAMMY Award for his collaboration with renowned musician and storyteller David Holt, and appear at venues and festivals around the country. In 2009 and 2013, Bill’s music appeared in the Ken Burns documentaries “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea” and “Country Music.” BILLMIZE.com

Sturtz released their second studio album Hyacinth in September 2024, and they're hard at work writing songs for their next album now. When they’re not playing music, you’ll probably find them gardening, honing in on their photography skills, or parading their giant dog around town. Some things are just meant to last. When Sarah Anderson and Paul DeHaven met and began playing together in 2004, they had no idea just how deep the well of their musical partnership would prove to be. After the disbanding of indie-folk sweethearts Paper Bird, the duo founded Heavy Diamond Ring and never looked back. HDR is the culmination (thus far) of their signature sound, a fountain of open-hearted, folk-rock, steeped in vocal harmony and group synergy. Led by Anderson's smooth-as-honey vocals and DeHaven's rugged guitar chops, the band has been described as "open-road, long drive music", having "a little bit of twang, and a whole lot of beef”, and their live show as "infectious and contagious". The band is rounded out by veteran knockouts Blake Stepan (bass), Mike Lang (keys), and Orion Tate Ignelzi (drums). Their second full-length LP, "All Out of Angels", out this fall, was produced by Ben Wysocki (the Fray) and Mark Anderson and features a duet with Nathaniel Rateliff. Out now on Cowboy Cowabunga Recordings. "Heavy Diamond Ring creates a sound that feels as classic as rolling down the windows in the summer - a super highway to a new frontier." -303 Magazine "...a helping of contemporary indie-folk that goes down easy, augmented by some subtle, snaky guitar work, walls of harmony vocals and Anderson's attention-grabbing vocals." -CS Indy

Founded by former members of Blessiddoom, Juveniles and the Bowie tribute band Glass Spiders, this trio of Missoula dads needed a space to unwind. Saxophone player Nathan Hoyme birthed this trio when he was finally ready to share a trove of songs for guitar which he had been secretly writing for decades. He called on power groovster Al Gooday to lay down some bass in order to electrify Nathan’s secret angsty ballads. Paul Rosen plugged in some heavy beats and brought his own secret songs which had been trying to escape his head since he was a teenager. With hints of sounds from classic Minnesota 80s Rock to alt-country and even grooves that’ll get you shaking that ass, a visit to Donkey Island is sure to quench anyone’s thirst for electric noise. Fresh off their world tour, Stiff Jeans needs no introduction. I have a mild case of it - whenever I hear a univibe pedal I get the feeling that the sound it is making is somehow purple. In my view, every band that’s worth anything does a kind of painting with synesthetic associations. A single sound might have a color, but the great bands and artists are the ones who knew how to make the right colors play together in some way. I don’t know of anyone ever trying to “paint” Idaho and the Inland Northwest in this way - trying to uproot this kind of mood that’s implicit in our landscapes. That mood was already in nature, wanting out. Our group is trying to let it out, in one way. But I do believe that the Lexicon LXP-1 Digital Reverb “sounds” like a blue sagebrush, the bass guitar “sounds” like volcanic basalt somehow. The lyrics to the songs are what they are, they just say what they mean like any other lyric. But they’re supposed to be set against a kind of backdrop - the high desert that most people fly over or drive through and never pay much mind to. There’s something there though, some kind of a landscape of sounds that has been mostly ignored… like a fossil. Thanks for reading. Spotify

From western Montana by way of Seattle and Chicago, “the Worm” is the subject of an upcoming book (Lay It Down in Full View), a feature-length documentary (Couldn't You Wait: The Story of Silkworm), and gratifyingly detailed essays across a variety of publications both print and online. Most importantly, the band released nine richly distinctive, influential albums and "a bunch" of singles, EPs, and compilations over an eighteen-year period, as well as touring worldwide in North America, Europe, and Asia, notably playing every state in the continental USA except Delaware. Joel R.L. Phelps founded Silkworm in 1987 and left the band in 1994. Andy Cohen, Tim Midyett, and Michael Dahlquist continued on as a trio for many prolific, creatively fertile years thereafter. The group disbanded immediately–and apparently permanently–upon Michael’s horrific murder in July 2005. In late July 2024, the surviving band members realized they would be in the same place at the same time–at a weekend-long memorial for their longtime engineer Steve Albini. They decided to reunite officially for a short set there to pay tribute to their dear friend. Jeff Panall (Songs: Ohia and Tim's band Mint Mile) joined them on drums. The experience of playing together as a quartet for the first time in thirty years was highly emotional and rewarding. The four of them discussed trying to regroup for some additional events...which led them to poking at the best possible options for doing so. After a quite successful summer and fall of shows in the central US in 2025, they are setting out on tour in May (central/eastern US) and August (western US) of 2026.JOEL R.L.
Sunday, August 9 // 7:30 PM Show // 7:00 PM Doors // $15 Bart Budwig is a son of Idaho, a cosmic country crooner, a rousing trumpet player, and cryin’-style soul singer. His music is made up of seemingly incongruous parts; thrum & strum country rhythms, jazz guitar melodies, R&B vocals. When Bart sings he draws out words into meditative mantras, whole note neologisms that keep you hanging on until his raspy voice trails off in a ragged edge. His forthcoming album, Another Burn On The AstroTurf (January 24, 2020, Fluff and Gravy Records) was recorded over five days by a seven-piece band inside the OK Theater. It’s a melancholy rhapsody that recalls the uncorked rock n’ roll spirituality of king mystic Van Morrison, the gloomy nostalgia of dark prince Nick Drake and the songcraft sans self-seriousness of 70s Muscle Shoals. Like those psycho-spiritual song crafters, his power comes from vocal idiosyncrasies – intonations of love, impermanence, hope, humor. The album opens with Budwig originals “Time For Two”, “First To Go”, and “Strong Coffee”– originally presented with just solo guitar (and crackling wood stove) on the album Sabai. The songs are recorded here live, full band, in medley, with hot electric guitar, woody double bass, and drums. The band electrifies and scourges the flesh of the songs into fully formed folk rock stunners. There is what the Romans called a “divine lustre” about Bart Budwig. His blonde hair and beard wrap around his collar, and frame his smile in a nimbus of gold. His radiance belies the loyalty he commands of an army of talent. He’d sooner tell you a joke than reveal to you he’s recorded dozens of albums and hundreds of songs in the last few years. Bart’s mastery of dramatic irony turns his work with complex emotional states of being into comforting, uplifting, relatable music. It’s this ability to combine tragedy and comedy in his humanist hallelujahs that makes Budwig a gravitational force and industry chimera. The studio general, the clown prince, the sensitive songwriter with a rugged voice. The soul singer with a cosmic country band. The creator of a folk universe drawing musicians from everywhere to the middle of nowhere. It’s this juxtaposition that makes Another Burn On The AstroTurfanother success for Bart Budwig, and a must listen for you. - Sean Jewell

Rooted in the acoustic stylings of Southern traditional music, it findsthe Arkansas native turning off his amp and stepping up to a ribbon microphone as a solo performer, singing in a voice that's equal parts country croon, Appalachian yodel, and high-lonesome field holler. Shoulders' interpretation of American roots music has always been more progressive and punky than the trucks-and-beers conservatism that passes for modern-day country, and Refugia Blues offers songs about climate collapse, radical anthropology, and generative disruption. It balances the macro with the micro, too, making room for love songs and personal topics, packaging humor alongside heavy insights. At once academic and accessible, Refugia Blues isn't just a deep dive into southernness, but also into Shoulders himself.
Saturday, August 1 // 7:00 PM Doors // 8:00 PM Show // $25 ADV // $30 DOS Seating will be limited to only those that need it James McMurtry released The Black Dog and the Wandering Boy on June 20th via New West Records. The 10-song collection was co-produced by McMurtry & Don Dixon (R.E.M., The Smithereens) and is his first album in four years. It follows his 2021 acclaimed new West debut, The Horses and the Hounds, which UnCut Magazine said “lifts storytelling-in-song to meticulous new levels" and Pitchfork awarded an 8.0, saying “James McMurtry stands out even among the Lone Star State’s finest songwriters…” The Black Dog and the Wandering Boy features appearances by Sarah Jarosz, Charlie Sexton, Bonnie Whitmore, Bukka Allen and more, alongside his trusted backing band, THE MARTIAL LAW REVIEW, Tim Holt on guitar and accordion, Cornbread on bass and Daren Hess on drums. As varied as they are, McMurtry’s new story-songs find inspiration in scraps from his family’s past: a rough pencil sketch by Ken Kesey that serves as the album cover, the hallucinations experienced by his father, the legendary writer Larry McMurtry, an old poem by a family friend. A supremely insightful and inventive storyteller, McMurtry teases vivid worlds out of small details, setting them to arrangements that have elements of Americana but sound too sly and smart for such a general category. Funny and sad often in the same breath, The Black Dog and the Wandering Boy adds a new chapter to a long career that has young songwriters like Sarah Jarosz and Jason Isbell cite him as a formative influence.
